So what’s a Haji anyway?
Haji: A common middle eastern word for pilgrim.
Pilgrim: A person on a journey to a holy land.
The journey a pilgrim takes to fulfill his obligation to a code or creed he follows. Also, a name given to a guard duty in the Middle East by U.S. soldiers when guarding local workers on military bases.
So what’s a soldier’s pilgrimage?
The journey a soldier takes throughout a military career as a soldier fulfills their duty and serves their country. An important milestone on that journey is the deployment to a combat zone. Deployment to a combat environment confronts a soldier with the realities of life and death first hand. This is often a catalyst to search the inner self and define a person’s beliefs about life and the world around them.
